Words & Music by Bob Ryan (C)2000
In the morning
Just before the dawn
When the heart sags
From the weight of dark’s crown
And the eye strains
To pierce the veil of the night
For just a glimpse of the light
It’s in these moments
There seems no end to the pain
When the clouds cry
And share their tears of rain
And this heart longs
For just a hint of the sight
For just a glimpse of the light
And on the drifting wind
Like a call scarce heard
Slowly opens the eye of the world
And in it we catch a glimpse of the light
When the shadows
Raise the flag of retreat
And the rhythm drums
In every heartbeat
And the forest
That hid the day from the night
Now gives a glimpse of the light
In the morning
In the glow of the dawn
My companions and I
Lift our voices in song
As the words rise
Like broken-winged birds in flight
We catch a glimpse of the light
Glimpse of the light

It has been said many times and it remains so very true: the darkest period is just before the dawn. But there is a caveat - it implies that an ongoing effort, a striving to grasp the truth is at work. One can succumb to a sense of unending darkness, a hopelessness. But it takes an arrogance of exalted proportion to assume such a thing.
What is required is a posture of learning, a humble posture, with the mind and heart open to possibilities undreamt of to be able to penetrate through the veils of self and find the confidence and courage needed to persevere. If such is the case, then there is always light following the dark....
