This song was written in response to a very difficult and challenging time.

And it seems to be that during periods like that we find our hearts and minds wandering, as if the "now" presents too many things to deal with...and our attention drifts....

But in the end this "drifting" or "inattention" comes back to bite us.  While we seem to get temporary relief from stress, other aspects of our lives suffer: relationships, life goals and the day-to-day stuff of a life.

While this is true of the mundane things of this world, it is especially true of the spiritually significant aspects of our lives.  Pre-occupation with the many aspects of our material existence often lead to an inattention to or forgetfulness of our spiritual nature.  And those spiritual capacities atrophy, weakening seriously, until our consciousness ceases to reference them - finally thinking of ourselves as mere bodies.  As if our bodies had become graves for our spirits.

Indeed, facing the challenges of this life with merely our material capacities, without the benefit of our accompanying spiritual capacities informing and providing context to our perception, we invariably make bad choices and bemoan our present.

To truly appreciate the "now" in our lives, to be fully present in our relationships and goal setting, we need to develop and utilize both our material and spiritual capacities.  Less we be like the bird, who's natural state is to fly through the high places of the world, becomes attracted to some flash of light on the ground, and investigating finds its wings become mired in the mud and, unable to lift itself heavenward again, eventually comes to see itself as incapable - even forgetting that it is inherently a being of the sky.........

LYRICS
Words & Music by Bob Ryan (C)1998

You and me, so blind are we
Set to the wheel
in the dark of the day
We smile and cry,
our souls young and spry
Flailing and laying about,
finding our way

But O so long
The road seems to climb and climb
How I long to be here

A simple thing it is to sing
To lift up your voice
at the break of day
But to walk this world
with love unfurled
Can tear the tears
from the eye of the heart

We may be wrong, we may be right
I just don’t know
where we stand in the light
But of all the souls, I have to say
Your's is the one
I’d share all of my days
To Be Here
